Seed Grants

Phase I - Interdisciplinary research in genome sciences

The Penn Genome Frontiers Institute (PGFI) is pleased to announce seed grant commitment to the development of interdisciplinary research in Genome Sciences. The seed grant program will support interdisciplinary teams in two phases with the goal of facilitating the development of the field of genomics at PENN. Grants will not be given to support extensions of ongoing research programs.

When preparing Phase I proposals, please keep in mind the following:

  • The Phase I seed grant program aims to support interdisciplinary groups for planning activities to formulate large-scale interdisciplinary grants. The groups are expected to spend six months developing detailed plans for a collaboration that will target program-project type grants or novel high-risk interdisciplinary collaborations. Phase I proposals provide seed money for fostering collaborative interactions that will lead to Phase II proposals. The Phase I proposals are NOT small project seed funds.
  • The Phase I proposal should describe the main idea that will lead to development of large projects and how the planning activities will be carried out. The evaluation of the grants will emphasize the scope and significance of the ideas and the synergetic strength of the team rather than feasibility. Interactions that foster new synergism will be favored over those providing support to already existing projects.
  • Please download the Seed Grant Application Guidelines for application instructions. The Proposal Submission Form must be completed for your application to be considered. Application due date TBA.
  • Deadlines and guidelines for the Phase II grant competition will be announced in Summer 2008.
